New affordable housing development opens in Crescent Heights

May 17, 2017 (CALGARY, AB) – The City of Calgary is pleased to announce that construction is complete on our city’s newest affordable housing development in Crescent Heights. Located at 210, 15 Ave. N.E., the development is a three-story, 16-unit multi-residential property.

The City of Calgary’s newest affordable housing development, located in the community of Crescent Heights, will provide 16 affordable homes for Calgarians..

Certified silver by Built Green Canada, the Crescent Heights affordable housing development features four studio units, four one-bedroom units, four two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units. Two units are barrier free, and one is built to accommodate the visually impaired.

Funding to build the Crescent Heights development was provided by the Provincial Government via a $2.1 million Housing Capital Initiative Grant and via $1.4 million in municipal funding through the Municipal Sustainability Initiative. The Crescent Heights development supports Council’s strategy to make affordable housing more readily available to individuals and families living on lower incomes.

“The Crescent Heights affordable housing development is a perfect example of how The City can repurpose vacant and valuable city land to help our fellow citizens living on lower incomes,” says Mayor Naheed Nenshi. “Even with this important new project, we still need to create more affordable housing. City Council made affordable housing a priority, and we are committed to working with the federal and provincial governments to make affordable housing available to even more Calgarians.”

Currently only 3.6 per cent of Calgary’s households are supported by non-market housing, which is below the national average of 6 per cent.

”All Albertans deserve a safe and affordable place to call home,” says Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Seniors and Housing. “I’m proud our government is making life better for Calgarians by investing in affordable housing projects like Crescent Heights. The new development will help address the housing shortage and support vulnerable Calgarians to thrive.”

Rents at the Crescent Heights development will be set according to a mixed income model to maintain the financial sustainability of the building and provide an inclusionary approach to housing where tenants of mixed financial means are blended together.

Calgary Housing Company will manage the building and will work with the residents and community to create and maintain a safe, secure and well-managed property. CHC has been Calgary’s leading housing provider for 40 years. CHC manages over 10,000 affordable housing units with more than 25,000 tenants and provides a variety of mixed income housing options.
